SECOND AFGHAN WAR · 1878–80

Three hundred miles, Kabul to Kandahar.

In August 1880 Roberts led a force of some 10,000 men on a forced march of 300 miles (480km) from Kabul to relieve the besieged garrison at Kandahar. Vonolel carried him the whole way.

The march made Roberts a national hero. Thereafter Vonolel became a familiar sight at ceremonial parades and camps of exercise throughout India.
